Welcome to Enspire Science’s ERC eligibility window calculator

The ERC eligibility window calculator assists PIs and research managers to determine:

  • the correct ERC category which the PI belongs to: Starting, Consolidator, or Advanced
  • the implications of the various eligible extensions that a PI may have
  • a 5-year outlook for the PI, based on current data and ERC guidelines
  • how the outlook may change with potential changes to the current data

This calculator applies the current official ERC guidelines of calculating the eligibility window and includes all possible extensions (maternity leave, paternity leave, long-illness leave, clinical training, etc.).

In order to use the calculator, simply fill in the requested data below. Based on your data, the calculator will provide the exact requested extension (in days) as well as the 5-year outlook of the ERC categories which are relevant in this case.

When filling in the data, refer to the detailed notes listed below for assistance and clarifications.

Eligibility window calculator – Notes

The main reference document is the ERC guide for applicants. We advise to consult this document for complete information, including special cases and the required supporting documentation per case.

Note 1 – Provide a date in the format of DD/MM/YYYY. This date should be the date of the actual award according to the national rules in the country where the degree was awarded.

Note 2For Medical Doctors (MD) or applicants holding a degree in medicine. If the MD is the first/only eligible degree, an automatic shift of 2 years of eligibility window is given (StG: 4-9 years past MD degree, CoG: 9-14 years past MD degree).

For an MD to be considered an eligible degree on its own, an applicant must provide proof of an appointment that requires doctoral equivalency (e.g. post-doctoral fellowship, professorship appointment).
For applicants awarded a PhD before an MD, the eligibility is calculated according to the PhD and this extension is not valid.

Note 3For maternity leave. Provide the number of children. The effective elapsed time for eligibility will be considered reduced by 18 months for each child born before or after the PhD award.

Note 4 – All other leaves. Provide the documented amount of leave actually taken in days, and in line with the following instructions:

  • Maternity leaves longer than 18 months – provide the documented amount of leave actually taken for each child, before or after the PhD award.
  • Paternity leave – the effective elapsed time for eligibility will be considered reduced by the documented amount of paternity leave actually taken for each child born before or after the PhD award.
  • Long-term illness, or national service – the effective elapsed time for eligibility will be considered reduced by the documented amount of leave actually taken by the PI for each incident which occurred after the PhD award.
  • Clinical training – the effective elapsed time for eligibility will be considered reduced by the documented amount of clinical training actually received by the Principal Investigator after the award of the first eligible degree, and by up to 4 years maximum.

In any case, the extension requested may not exceed the time between the start date of the documented circumstance and the call deadline.
